We all have things we love to do on a regular basis. Some are good for us while others aren’t. If you’re not sure about having any bad habits but you’re not performing at your best, use this list as your guide. Learn how you can change for the better as an entrepreneur.
1. Staying up late
It’s okay to stay up late as long as you have a good reason like spending quality time with your family or ironing out some problems in your business. But if you’re only using the late hours like scrolling aimlessly on social media, then you need to put a timer on the apps that waste your time. Go to sleep early and get a good night’s rest.
2. Pleasing everyone
Sparking the ire of people is the last thing we need as entrepreneurs. Good relationships must be built if we want our business to succeed. But the truth is, we cannot please everyone. There will always be people who won’t like us.
Focus on doing what’s best for your business and yourself. If one marketing tactic won’t impress a few people but would be effective to many, by all means, carry out your plan.
3. Not being able to say no
As a continuation to the bad habit of pleasing everyone, we also have the tendency to never say no to requests. Even if such requests are a great inconvenience to our lives as business owners. It might be a partner who’s giving you errands all the time or friends who can’t understand the concept of “career responsibility.”
This habit is hard to break. But you can start by saying no to demands one at a time. Convince yourself not to feel bad about declining and prevent yourself from explaining why. Just say no and let it be the end of the story.
4. Vices
Drinking alcohol, smoking, binge-eating, or relaxing from time to time is fine. Nobody should judge you for having such luxuries as long as you don’t indulge in them regularly. But if you do and they start to negatively impact your life and performance as a business owner, then you should seek help from a professional.
5. Giving people too many chances
Forgiving people for their mistakes and giving them a chance for redemption is a good human quality. But if the same people keep on screwing up expecting you to not take offense, then your kindness gets abused. This won’t just cause you stress but it will also drag your business down.
Set a limit to your tolerance. Cut ties with those who are taking your goodness for granted. Get angry if you think you’re on the right. Anger is an important emotion. It should be acknowledged because it’s necessary to protect our life and business.
6. Harboring resentment
While feeling angry is important, like life luxuries, too much of it can be a bad thing. As the quote says, “Resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” You think that it helps you in the long run but in reality, it eats you up slowly.
Instead of allowing yourself to fume in rage, move on. Find ways to keep your inner peace regardless of how people around you behave.
7. Complaining
It’s okay to complain or vent out your frustrations and problems. What’s not okay is when you do it without seeking solutions. We’re not saying you should prevent yourself from complaining. What we’re suggesting is that you complain less and focus more on problem-solving. Better yet, make a habit of fixing things first and complaining after.
Good habits are hard to form and bad habits are hard to break. However, don’t think that it’s too late to get rid of the bad ones you have right now. The first step to changing your bad practices is knowing what they are. And since you’ve done that by reading this blog post, the next step is to be mindful of all your actions. In time, you’ll develop the habit of thinking before acting and quickly divert your attention to doing productive things.
