Why don’t we see more women as business leaders? This is a mystery that has created a lot of negative myths against females in the world of entrepreneurship. Everyone is made equal, that is the universal truth.
We’re all just raised in different circumstances and live in different forms of societies. And that doesn’t mean we don’t have what it takes to be successful as entrepreneurs. These are the negative beliefs regarding women in the world of business and why they’re plainly wrong.
Myth #1: Women are bad negotiators
Just because women negotiate differently doesn’t mean they’re bad negotiators. Angela Merkel, the very first Kanzlerin von Deutschland, and many others have proven that wrong. Imagine the multitude of business deals you have to make to put your country as the largest economy in Europe, 4th in the whole world, and the shining example of the European Union’s progress.
Myth #2: Women-led businesses create less revenue
This myth was born because not a lot of studies pay attention to the success of female business leaders. Let’s take a look at Lockheed Martin – a giant conglomerate with a female at the helm. Marillyn Hewson with her 38 years is one of the reasons the weapons manufacturer has stayed above Boeing.
Myth #3: Entrepreneurship is for women only in their 20s
Wrong. Every successful entrepreneur, man or woman, knows that their peak years in handling their businesses happen later in their lives. It is a matter of experience and establishing connections with the right people or business entities that contribute to a company’s massive growth.
Myth 4: All entrepreneurs are men because women don’t start their own business
If this myth was true then the success stories by Rihanna, Jessica Alba, and Kylie Jenner are jokes. As I said, entrepreneurship is known to be a game of men because nobody pays attention to women. It’s a classic case of double standards among genders.
Myth #5: Women are bad with numbers
Throughout the years of my experience as an entrepreneur, women are the most thriftiest and calculating bunch of people on the planet. This is due to the fact that we’re assertive hagglers and masters of budgeting when it comes to daily living expenses. And the more women who are sent to school, the more this gender stigma is eradicated.
Myth #6: Women are less ambitious than men
I would like to start the argument that this myth only exists due to traditions. Because how can a woman be ambitious if throughout her entire life, she’s told that her responsibilities are only bearing children and taking care of them? Now imagine a woman who is born from a wealthy business-oriented family. The circumstances would be different.
All in all, women are just as efficient as their male counterparts when it comes to being business leaders. What we need is a strong drive, confidence, immense knowledge, and wisdom to excel in our own niches. And most importantly, a woman needs to be patient and calculating so she can strike hard and accurately when opportunities are present for leadership.
So don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t and should do. Be confident in your own experiences and abilities to be an entrepreneur!
