As solopreneurs, we’re preoccupied with so many things to do in the business. It seems that we’re programmed to be actively involved nearly 100% of the time. But did you know that the most successful people have slack in their day? Slack or white space refers to certain times in your day where you don’t hustle and focus on your work. Because the truth is that, sustaining a high level of intensity in your business is not realistic!
White space has many benefits. It may look like you’re just taking a break or slacking off, but it could be the best thing you do not just for your health and well-being, but also for your business. Overworking leads to a loss of sleep which drastically reduces your energy and focus to plan, strategize, and be your best self. Distancing yourself from work will also help you gain some perspective.
In this article, I’m going to share ways to create white space in your solopreneur life.
Ask yourself, “What does my schedule look like?”
The first thing you need to do is to take a good look at your calendar. Visualize it mentally if you haven’t marked an actual calendar. Find a time in your daily schedule where you can get your mind off work. Be protective about that time. Set an alarm for those breaks if you must.
Let productivity be your ultimate goal – not busyness.
You may already know that being busy doesn’t mean being productive. When you’re productive, you’re being smart about how you make use of the limited time you have in a day. On the other hand, when you’re busy, it means that you’re saying yes to anything. Eventually, your day gets filled with random projects and responsibilities that don’t matter that much in the long run.
Stop feeling guilty about slack.
Do yourself a big favor by always thinking that you deserve to take some time off from focusing. If you want to be a happier and healthier solopreneur, be the first person to show kindness to yourself. Say “Kudos to me for my hardwork!” and do something else that brings you joy. Maybe you’d love to dedicate your white space to drawing, reading magazines, shopping, or daydreaming about the ultimate vacation.
Take a break from social media.
Negativity on social media can add unnecessary stress in your life. And while you need social media to build your audience, you don’t have to use it for comparing yourself with other solopreneurs or checking random stuff. Turn off social media when you’re having a conversation with a friend. Don’t use your vacation time for being active on social media.
Conclusion
Do you already have white space in your life? If your answer is no, be sure to follow these tips. Know when to shut the door. Slack is about being intentional about your time. Like this post? Share it or leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
