Many young and single people think that money, power, respect, fame, and material possessions are the true sources of happiness. But for us parents, we prefer to have more time. Once we reach parenthood, our responsibilities multiply and we don’t have enough seconds to fulfill them all.
Although we’re able to do the things needed to be done most of the time, the price we pay for it is sacrificing our own sands in the hourglass. That’s why in this article, we’re going to discuss ways on how we can still have our own moments of peace and happiness despite a career and children to care of.
1. Minimize time wasters
Every parent has their own pastime activities. But sometimes these activities, when done mindlessly, can turn into a procrastination session. You must limit the time you spend on things that add zero value to your life as a parent.
A couple of examples are social media surfing, binge-watching, and checking emails. These things can be done at the right place and the right time. Spending time on these things will only eat up your schedule for doing homely responsibilities which in turn reduces your me-time.
2. Follow a consistent sleeping routine
Helping your kids with their homework, telling them bedtime stories, and making sure they brush their teeth can drag on to the point that you can’t do your evening unwind. You must set a timeframe of how much time you’ll spend for every parenting activity.
When the timer is up, call it a day, unwind, and resume tomorrow. Your kids will get used to it and take initiative. Once they do, reward their efforts. The beauty of setting a strict evening schedule and routine is that it also teaches your children to be independent at early ages.
3. Find time-saving meal strategies
One of the biggest time-wasting responsibilities for parents is cooking. A single meal would take an hour or more if all the ingredients are still to be prepared. I arrived late at the office so many times because I had to make sure my daughter has something to eat before I go.
Here’s my tip: Chop all the veggies, spices, meat, and fruits in advance and store them in containers before putting them in the fridge. When the time comes for you to cook, all you have to do is take the containers out and begin the cooking process.
4. Consider a career change
Not every career is for an individual’s lifestyle. Some jobs are good for singles while others fit better for parents. If your job only leaves you enough time for your family, you should find another one that’s less demanding of your time.
There are also some who work at home and would prefer to be in an office setting for more focus. Whatever you think is best for you and your children, take the chance. But before you do, make sure that whoever you’re leaving your kids with is trustworthy to keep them safe and happy.
5. Get moving
Staying fit is difficult once you’re a parent. The time spent exercising will be used for childcare. But here’s a secret my friends and I share: Every time we go to the grocery for next week’s supply, we don’t take the car or commute. Instead, we jog or bike on the way and only ride back to our homes.
Because of this strategy, we can still sweat our extra calories out while being able to enjoy the peace and view of the outdoors.
Being a parent is one of the greatest joys in life, but sometimes having a job gets in the way of us experiencing that invaluable happiness. The only thing we can do is to make more time for ourselves so we can stay sane and productive.
