One of the toughest days of a solopreneur is knowing that you’ll need to skimp on sleep. This blog post may even be contradictory to start with since we’ve been talking about achieving work-life balance and productivity tips right from the start.
But let’s face the truth: Sometimes, to meet a deadline, you find yourself believing that staying up all night alone is a good idea. It’s your only option. So in this post, I’ve prepared some tips that will help ease the experience for you – and help you get the results you expect for your business.
Get some rest first.
It’s impossible to power through the night if you’re not well-rested or don’t take a nap before you binge work. Banking a few hours of sleep can prevent exhaustion. Trust me, this works. In fact, getting some sleep beforehand is more effective than napping in the middle of work. You might sleep all the way through.
Take a coffee nap.
The coffee or “caffeine” nap is a technique that effectively combats sleepiness. It capitalizes on the fact that it takes 20 minutes for the body to experience the effects of coffee. The minutes that pass by from the moment you drink that cup of coffee can be utilized for resting. By the time you wake up from the nap, you’ll feel refreshed and fully alive.
Do the jumping jacks.
It’s no secret that exercise increases blood flow throughout your body – including your brain. And you’ve guessed it right. Do a quick and light exercise when you feel like nodding off. The jumping jacks are a great way to increase your heart rate, allowing you to stay awake and attentive. You can even sprint in place if you like.
Avoid snacking on sugar.
The last thing you should do (if you are to avoid regret) is to snack on something sweet and high-carb. To stay awake, a sugary treat isn’t what you need. Once your blood sugar levels spike, and you feel that temporary satisfaction, it’ll immediately go down and make you feel more exhausted than ever. Instead, choose snack foods that provide lasting energy. Protein and fiber are great choices. Go for hard-boiled eggs, almonds, whole-grain crackers, or greek yogurt.
Turn all the lights on.
Don’t do anything you usually do at bedtime: dim the lights. Being exposed to light will make it difficult for you to fall asleep since artificial light interferes with your circadian rhythm (24-hour sleep-wake cycle). So, turn on the bright lights and work your way into the morning!
Listen to great music.
Music has never failed to boost one’s energy. When it comes to pulling an all-nighter, be sure to listen to cheerful and upbeat music. Yes, classical music may stimulate your creativity, but playing this at an unlikely hour of the day can backfire. I would suggest preparing a playlist and even letting a friend or spouse recommend some energizing tunes.
Conclusion
Use these tips to your advantage when sleeping isn’t a choice. And remember: the day following an all-nighter should be spent for rest and relaxation. You need to recover!
Do what you have to do to get stuff done in your solopreneur business, but don’t make it a habit to skimp on sleep. Good luck!!!
