Surely, you’ve got goals and dreams for 2020. But is beating stress one of them? We often don’t think of stress until we encounter it.
Here are some must-know stats about stress:
- Americans are among the most stressed out populations worldwide.
- Women are more stressed out than men.
- 52% of generation Z in the United States are diagnosed with mental health issues.
- In 2017, 39% of workers report that a heavy workload was their major stressor.
- Stress causes sleep deprivation for 66% of American workers.
As you can see, stress has negative effects on people. Today, let’s talk about the ways to reduce stress for better mental health, happiness, peace, and more focus.
1. Spend time with your pet.
Don’t have a pet? Consider getting one today. While human friends are great, furry friends are awesome. Studies show that pets are a calming presence. They provide unconditional love that you may not feel with people. Pets encourage you to exercise which boosts happy hormones.
2. Remember what you enjoy about your work.
You may be running a solopreneur business or employed. Regardless, you need to take some time to reflect on what you actually like about your job. Dwell on these positive aspects throughout the day. If you cannot think of any, maybe it’s time to make a change.
3. Tackle an art project.
Art has the power to eliminate stress because it provides an outlet for negative emotions. It’s an effective distraction from a difficult situation. If it’s not possible to join an art class, you can simply doodle on a notebook. Why not create a symbolic mandala that allows you to process what you’re feeling?
4. Don’t try to do everything yourself.
The idea of a self-made individual is one reason why many people believe they can accomplish things on their own. Are you reluctant to ask for help? Set aside your pride and embrace the fact that there are those who have the knowledge, skill, and time to accomplish something you can’t. Ask a friend or colleague to help you. Hire a small virtual team.
5. Wrap up in a weighted blanket.
Weighted blankets, as the term implies, are blankets that have extra weight. Weighing between 5 to 30 pounds, they put pressure on your body to relax your nervous system. Their benefits include reduced pain, lower anxiety, and a better mood.
6. Take a nap!
If you have missed a good night’s sleep or are overwhelmed with work, take a 30-minute nap. Napping counters the consequences of sleep restriction. It also makes you more productive and creative. Worried that you’ll nap a long time? Set an alarm.
7. Listen to music.
What’s great about music is that you can take advantage of it while conducting your daily activities. The right kind of music offers a beautiful backdrop that enables you to enjoy what you do and feel more relaxed. Classical and acoustic instrumental tracks are two of my favorite choices for beating stress. Music without lyrics is best for therapy.
